1. Heart rate

How do I find my maximum heart rate?

Your maximum heart rate is primarily determined by age and genetics, and it can vary greatly among individuals of all age groups. Therefore, it's impossible to create a formula that accurately calculates maximum heart rate for everyone. To ensure that you have entered the correct maximum heart rate in our app, we recommend the following fitness test:

  1. Warm up thoroughly until you are warm and moderately sweaty.
  2. Perform two interval sessions of four minutes each, where your almost out of breath by the end of each interval. Take three minutes of rest with less intense activity between each session.
  3. Start the third interval session. After two minutes, increase the intensity even further and continue until you can't go any further. Your maximum heart rate will then be the highest heart rate you reach.

We recommend performing the maximum heart rate test with fast walking or running uphill, but you can also use a stationary bike. You could read more and see an example of a complete maximum heart rate test here (Norwegian only).

If you don't have a heart rate monitor, you can measure your maximum heart rate by placing two fingers on your carotid artery and counting your pulse beats for 15 seconds immediately after completing the test. Multiply the number of pulse beats by four to get your correct maximum heart rate.

If you are in Trondheim, you can contact us to schedule a maximum heart rate test in our testing facilities. We also have testing partners who can conduct maximum heart rate testing in other locations across the country.
